Giants

Details
Category: Accidental Origins

After the creation of the world and the making of its creatures, the dragons were left with the immense power of the Starheart. They mistrusted the gods and their chosen peoples, and so they decided to hide the Starheart away. Working together and channeling the Starheart's magic, they raised new land from the sea. This land was vast, rugged, and wild. Deep in its very core, they hid the Starheart away from the eyes of the Pantheon.

Unbeknownst to the dragons, the Starheart created new life from the bones of the world. Immense beings of primal power rose up: the giants. As they woke to sentience, the giants spread over the wild lands and made them their own. The giants had a tendency toward savagery and anger, but celebrated as hard as they fought.

The dragons realized their folly too late. While not truly understanding the power and potential of the Starheart, they knew that it was theirs and refused to give it up. With the dragons' reduced numbers and the giants' might, the great wyrms found themselves unable to reclaim their artifact. To this day, the giants retain the Starheart, and the dragons desperately want it back.

The giants are functionally immortal, never dying of old age and immune to disease. When a giant dies of accident or violence, they emerge reborn thanks to the magic of the Starheart.

Their children, however, are mortal. These Goliaths are large and powerful, but much less so than their titanic forebears. The goliaths organize themselves into tribes focused on nearby giants, whom they revere deeply. Goliaths breed true amongst themselves. Viewed as untamed barbarians by the rest of the world, they have developed their own society and traditions quite apart from the children of the gods and dragons.

Planetouched

Category: Accidental Origins

The gods of Astaria guard their world jealously. Though they were formed, in part, thanks to the influence of other planes, they view themselves as a bulwark to stop the denizens of those planes from entering their domain. Nonetheless, on occasion, powerful magic or ill luck allows beings through to Astaria to mingle with the gods' creations.

When these beings create offspring with Astarian mortals, the result is Planetouched. These creatures carry a powerful legacy that originated from a place far beyond the stars, and their appearance and abilities reflect this.

Evil creatures create Tieflings, while Good beings beget Aasimar. Meanwhile Changelings result from the influence of Chaos, and Warforged are under the influence of Law.

All Planetouched are treated with attitudes ranging from fear to suspicion to outright hostility. Their very existence is a defiance of the will of the gods, and their lives are often terribly difficult as a result. The best they can usually hope for is to be seen as a useful tool to be exploited, which at least brings them better treatment as a valuable asset. Nonetheless, Planetouched are capable of the full range of heroism and villainy as their native brethren.
